The Whooping Crane migration is underway and so are the students in Room 114!
Mile-A-Thon
The students in Room 114 have been actively gathering information on whooping cranes. Not only are we learning about their behaviors and habitat, but we have learned a lot already about the conservation efforts that are contributing to the come back of the Whooping Crane population. We will be tracking the cranes as they fly the 1,285 miles on their journey from Wisconsin to Florida!
Our class has undertaken the Operation Migration challenge to also make the journey by walking 1,285 miles as well. Do you think we can beat the cranes to Florida? That’s our challenge!! A class of 20 students each walking just ½ a mile a day could chalk up 50 miles in a typical school week! Ah….but at that rate the cranes might beat us to Florida - and there’s the challenge!
The cranes are at the mercy of Mother Nature and do not fly every day due to weather conditions. We, on the other hand, can walk in just about any condition. Our class is registered for the Mile-A-Thon and will begin tracking our mileage on Monday, October 7.
How can you do this? Walk to and from school! Keep track of your average mileage at your sport events! Join us in an adventure of a life time as we begin the Fall migration with the cranes to the north!!!
